Pelham Figure Skating Club - A History
The Pelham Figure Skating Club was founded in 1971 and first operated in an open air location now popularly known as “The Pit”. Membership that first year totalled 48 and six hours of ice time was allocated to our Club. At that time, we employed only one Professional Coach.
The passing years have seen a number of changes. Most notable was the opening of our present facility, the Pelham Arena, in January of 1975, with our Club donating $10,000 to the building fund. By this time, our membership had increased to 110.
We continue to make improvements to the arena for our members. In 1996, we extensively renovated an old storage area providing a spacious room for the exclusive use of our Professional Coaches plus an additional storage room for Club equipment.
Our Skate Canada (formerly CFSA) sanction was granted in 1976 and since that time we have offered virtually all the programs and opportunities that Skate Canada has developed. Our membership has more than tripled since being sanctioned and we are extremely proud of the quality of our programs and the dedication of our Professional Coaches.
Interest in Synchronized Skating has grown steadily at our Club since 1989. In varying seasons, we have had Festival teams from almost every category: Pre-Juvenile, Juvenile, Pre-Novice, Novice, Adult and Masters, all of whom have earned reputations as “contenders” at every competition that they attended. In fact, our Pre-Juvenile Team was the All Ontario Bronze Medallists in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002.
Each year, in order to highlight our skaters’ accomplishments, we stage either a special showcase day called “Celebrate Our Skaters” for our younger members, or a Senior Ice Show or Interpretive competition for the older skaters.
Our Board of Directors is committed to providing quality programs at competitive rates and we endeavour to improve and expand with each passing year.
